Description

Barley grass juice powder is the pressed juice of young barley grass, dried at low temperature. Barley grass juice powder is a different article from the whole leaf powder sold beside it at half the price. Pressing removes the insoluble leaf fibre, so what remains per gram is the soluble fraction. That is the whole case for a juice powder, and it is also why barley grass juice powder costs more, dissolves better and comes in smaller scoops.

What is in the tub

Ingredient juice of Hordeum vulgare grass leaf, dried
Process pressed, then dried at low temperature, no fillers
Not milled whole leaf, which retains the insoluble fibre
Harvest young grass cut before the grain stage
Flavour unflavoured, grassy, mixes into water without grit
Testing heavy metal panel published for every lot
Price basis per gram, printed under the price

Juice powder against whole leaf powder

Whole leaf powder is the entire blade, dried and milled, fibre and all. It is cheap, it is gritty and a large part of each gram is cellulose that does not dissolve. A juice powder throws that fraction away during pressing, which is both the reason it is more concentrated in solubles and the reason the yield is low, since a lot of fresh grass goes into a little powder. Neither is better. They are priced differently because they are made differently.

If a label just says barley grass, you cannot tell which one you are buying, and the price is usually the only clue. Every listing on the greens and wholefood page states which process produced the powder, along with scoop weight and servings per tub.

How barley grass juice powder is priced

Per gram, which is the only fair way to do it. A juice powder scoop is smaller than a whole leaf scoop, so a tub holding fewer grams can still carry more servings, and a heavier tub can be the worse buy. Scoop weight, servings per tub and cost per serving are printed on every listing. Barley grass juice powder costs more per gram than milled leaf and less per gram of soluble material, and both of those statements are true at the same time.

Storing barley grass juice powder

Keep it dry and out of the light. Chlorophyll and the water soluble vitamins degrade with heat, light and moisture, which is why barley grass juice powder ships in an opaque container and why a tub left open on a sunny windowsill is money thrown away. The assay on the certificate describes the lot as it was packed, not as it will be after a summer on the counter.

Grass, not grain

Barley grass is the leaf, harvested before the plant forms a seed head, and the leaf is not the grain. Cut height and harvest timing are therefore part of the specification rather than agronomic trivia, because a late harvest changes what is in the tub. Anyone who avoids gluten strictly should read the lot certificate and ask about the harvest window rather than rely on the word grass on a front label.

What the published work actually covers

Most of the literature on barley grass juice powder is compositional, meaning analyses of its vitamin, mineral, chlorophyll and antioxidant content rather than controlled human trials. The handful of human studies are small and use varying preparations at varying doses, so there is no established intake to compare a scoop against. That is a description of the evidence base and not a claim about this tub, and we would rather say it plainly than imply a research record that is not there.

Why the metals panel matters here

Leafy crops take up what is in their soil and irrigation water, and a juice powder concentrates the soluble part of that. Every lot of barley grass juice powder goes to an independent laboratory for lead, cadmium, arsenic and mercury, plus identity and microbials, and the results are published with the listing. Lots over limit are withdrawn and their certificates stay up. The reasoning is in why we publish the batch that failed, and the panel itself is explained in how to read a certificate of analysis.

For intake references on the individual nutrients a greens powder is often bought for, the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements fact sheet library is the free source worth starting from. The certificate for the batch you are shipped is linked above.

Third time reordering. Consistent batch to batch, which is the whole point.
