Description

Ashwagandha KSM-66 at 600 mg, which is the extract most of the published research used, standardised to 5 percent withanolides and taken from root only. Three things in that sentence are specifications rather than decoration, and each one changes what you are buying. The branded extract names a defined manufacturing process. The percentage names the marker compound the material is calibrated against. Root only excludes leaf, which carries a different withanolide profile altogether.

Specification

Plant Withania somnifera, root, no leaf material
Extract ashwagandha KSM-66, a water based branded extract
Amount 600 mg per serving
Standardisation 5 percent withanolides by HPLC, assayed per lot
Withanolide content about 30 mg per serving at that percentage
Verification the percentage is measured on the certificate, not assumed
Interactions thyroid medication and sedatives, so ask a pharmacist

Why ashwagandha ksm-66 is specified rather than described

Generic ashwagandha on a label can be ground root, a 2.5 percent extract, a root and leaf blend or almost anything in between, and 600 mg of one is not 600 mg of another. A named branded extract is a reproducible article: plant part, extraction solvent and marker percentage are all fixed, so a figure from a published trial can be matched against a bottle on a shelf. Sensoril, the other widely studied branded extract, uses root and leaf at a higher glycoside percentage, and the two are not swapped quietly for one another.

The herbals page sets out the extract ratio, plant part and marker rules we apply across the botanical range. Ashwagandha KSM-66 is simply the clearest example of them, since the branded specification does the work a generic label leaves undone.

What the trials used and measured

Human studies on this extract have generally run 600 mg a day, either as a single dose or as 300 mg twice, over six to twelve weeks, and the endpoints recorded were salivary cortisol, scores on anxiety and sleep questionnaires, and in a few sports studies strength and oxygen uptake figures. That is a description of what was administered and measured in the literature. It is not a claim about this bottle, and the amount sits on the front label precisely so you can check the two against each other yourself.

Ashwagandha ksm-66 and Sensoril, side by side

These are the two branded extracts with real research behind them and they are built differently. KSM-66 is a water based root only extract standardised to 5 percent withanolides, usually given at 300 to 600 mg. Sensoril uses root and leaf, standardises to 10 percent withanolide glycosides, and is usually given at 125 to 250 mg. Neither figure converts into the other, so a bottle listing only milligrams of ashwagandha extract has left out the part that decides the comparison. Ashwagandha ksm-66 is specified here with its plant part, its process and its percentage.

What 5 percent withanolides means on an ashwagandha ksm-66 label

Six hundred milligrams at 5 percent is about 30 mg of withanolides, and that is the number worth carrying between labels. A 1,000 mg capsule of ground root with no stated percentage might hold a fraction of it. A 300 mg extract at 10 percent holds the same 30 mg from half the powder. Percentage times weight is the only comparison that holds, which is why both figures are printed on this listing and why the certificate carries the measured percentage rather than the target.

Testing and identity

Adulteration, not potency, is the real risk with botanical material, since a cheaper root is easy to substitute into a milled powder. Every lot of ashwagandha ksm-66 goes to an independent laboratory, which confirms species identity, measures the withanolide percentage and screens heavy metals, pesticides, aflatoxins and microbials on every lot. Lots failing identity or potency are withdrawn and the certificate stays published. The four seals article explains what a certification mark on a box does and does not cover.

Two plain notes

This plant interacts with thyroid medication and with sedatives, so raise it with a pharmacist before stacking anything on top of it. For a government summary of what has been studied and what has not, the NCCIH herbs at a glance series is short, free and sells nothing. The certificate for your lot is linked on this page.
