Description

Psyllium fibre powder from whole husk, ground fine, unflavoured, with nothing else in the tub. The plant is Plantago ovata and the husk is the outer coat of the seed, which is roughly 70 percent soluble fibre by weight. Grams of fibre per scoop are printed with the scoop weight beside them, because a psyllium fibre powder sold by volume rather than by weight is impossible to compare against anything.

What is in the tub

Ingredient whole psyllium husk, milled, single ingredient
Plant Plantago ovata, seed husk
Fibre grams per scoop printed, mostly soluble
Additions no sugar, no flavouring, no colour, no sweetener
Behaviour in water forms a mucilage within a minute
Testing heavy metal panel on every lot
Price basis per gram, printed under the price

Whole husk against the ground and the capsule versions

Whole husk is the coarse flake. Ground husk, which is what this is, mixes more readily and gels faster. Powdered psyllium in capsules delivers a fraction of a gram each, so matching a 5 gram serving takes a handful of them, and that is why the capsule format costs several times more per gram of fibre.

None of the three is more potent than the others. They are the same husk at different particle sizes, and the only real differences are texture, speed of gelling and price per gram. Every item on the gut health page states its grams per serving so this kind of comparison takes seconds.

The water instruction is not decoration

Psyllium fibre powder absorbs many times its weight in water and gels quickly. Taken with too little liquid it can swell in the throat or oesophagus, which is a documented choking and obstruction risk rather than a theoretical one. Stir a serving into a full glass, drink it immediately rather than letting it stand, and follow it with more water.

What the research administered

Published trials have used roughly 3 to 10 grams a day, often split, over four to twelve weeks, with endpoints including stool frequency and consistency, transit time, LDL cholesterol concentrations and glycaemic measurements taken with meals. Those are the amounts given and the measurements recorded in the literature. They are not claims about this tub, and the FDA regulates which claims a fibre product may make at all, as set out on the FDA dietary supplement pages.

Starting amount

Begin at a third of a serving for several days. Jumping straight to 10 grams of a gelling fibre from a low fibre diet produces cramping and wind, which is the most common reason people abandon psyllium fibre powder in the first week. Our note on what starting low actually means is the general case.

What a psyllium fibre powder serving costs

Cents, which is worth stating in a category where branded fibre drinks are sold at several dollars a sachet. The husk itself is cheap, the price difference between brands is mostly flavouring and packaging, and the per gram figure under the price makes that visible. Unflavoured psyllium fibre powder is the cheapest soluble fibre on this shelf by a wide margin.

Medicine timing

A gelling fibre can slow the absorption of medicines taken at the same time, and the usual pharmacy advice is to separate them by two hours in either direction. Anyone on a narrow therapeutic index medicine should confirm that with a pharmacist rather than assume it.

Taste and texture, honestly

Psyllium fibre powder is bland and slimy, and no amount of description changes either. Mixed with juice it is tolerable. Left standing for five minutes it becomes a gel you will not want to drink. This is the least pleasant product on the shelf and also one of the cheapest per gram.

Testing

Every lot of psyllium fibre powder is identity tested and assayed for fibre content by an independent laboratory, with lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury and microbials screened as well. Out of specification lots are withdrawn and the failing certificate stays published rather than being replaced quietly, as described in why we publish the batch that failed.

Third time reordering. Consistent batch to batch, which is the whole point.

Works well. I would prefer it unflavoured but that is a personal thing.

  3. Tom B. (verified owner) –

Exactly what the label says. I checked the lab sheet before I ordered.

The price per milligram made the comparison obvious. Switched from a pricier brand.
