Three different measurement systems live on this page, and mixing them up is the usual mistake. Live cultures are counted in colony forming units, from 1 billion to 100 billion per capsule. Fiber is weighed in grams, typically 3 to 12 per scoop. Enzymes are quoted in activity units specific to each one, such as HUT for protease, DU for amylase and FIP for lipase. A milligram figure on an enzyme label is close to meaningless, so the activity unit is printed instead.
Strain naming is the quality marker for cultures. Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG is a specific organism with a specific research record. Lactobacillus rhamnosus on its own could be anything. Every listing gives genus, species and strain code.
Count at manufacture versus count at expiry is the other figure to check. Our labels state the guaranteed number at the end of shelf life, with storage conditions, and say whether the capsule is delayed release.
Fiber type is named: inulin, partially hydrolyzed guar gum, acacia, psyllium husk, resistant starch. Grams of each are listed individually in blends.
An independent laboratory verifies strain identity, count and contaminant screening on every lot. Under-count lots are withdrawn and the report stays on the public results page, which is the only way a number printed on a gut product can be checked.
