Description

Methylcobalamin 1000mcg per tablet, designed to dissolve under the tongue. Methylcobalamin is one of the two coenzyme forms of vitamin B12 and carries a methyl group where cyanocobalamin carries a cyanide group, which is the usual reason buyers seek it out. A methylcobalamin 1000mcg tablet is also an enormous multiple of the daily reference intake, and the reason for that is arithmetic rather than marketing.

On the panel

Active methylcobalamin 1000mcg per tablet
Form methylcobalamin, a coenzyme form, not cyanocobalamin
Route sublingual tablet, dissolved rather than swallowed
Reference intake 2.4 mcg a day for adults
Multiple about 400 times that figure
Upper limit none set, because of low toxicity
Testing potency verified per lot by an outside laboratory

Why a methylcobalamin 1000mcg dose is 400 times the requirement

B12 absorption has two routes. The efficient one needs intrinsic factor and saturates at roughly 1.5 to 2 micrograms per dose. Beyond that, absorption falls back on passive diffusion, which captures on the order of one percent of what is present.

So a 1,000 microgram tablet is not an attempt to deliver 1,000 micrograms. It is a way of getting perhaps ten micrograms through a low efficiency route. That is published absorption physiology, and the full account is on the NIH vitamin B12 fact sheet.

Methylcobalamin against cyanocobalamin, honestly

Compared with methylcobalamin 1000mcg, cyanocobalamin is more stable, much cheaper, and the form used in the great majority of the clinical literature. The cyanide moiety it carries is present in trivial quantity. Methylcobalamin is a coenzyme form the body uses without that conversion step.

Head to head human trials measuring serum B12 and homocysteine have generally found both forms raise the markers, with limited evidence that either is clearly superior in people without specific metabolic conditions. We stock both, name the form, and let the buyer decide.

Does sublingual delivery help

This is the claim the format is sold on, so here is the published position. Trials comparing sublingual and swallowed B12 at equal doses have measured similar increases in serum B12 and similar falls in homocysteine.

The format is convenient, pleasant and useful for anyone who dislikes swallowing tablets. The evidence that it delivers more B12 than the same dose swallowed is weak. That is a description of the literature, not a claim about this tablet.

Methylcobalamin 1000mcg against an injection

Intramuscular B12 bypasses absorption entirely and is what clinicians use for diagnosed deficiency, particularly where intrinsic factor is the problem. A tablet cannot replicate that, and this page is not going to pretend otherwise.

Trials in people without absorption defects have compared high dose oral B12 with injections and measured comparable serum responses, which is the published basis for oral dosing at these amounts. A methylcobalamin 1000mcg tablet sits in that territory.

Why the tablet is small and the figure is large

A thousand micrograms is one milligram, so the active occupies almost none of the tablet and the rest is the base that holds it together and lets it dissolve. A methylcobalamin 1000mcg tablet is mostly excipient by weight, which is normal at microgram doses and worth understanding before comparing tablet sizes.

Who is measured as low

B12 occurs in animal foods, so vegan and strict vegetarian diets are the obvious case, and absorption also falls with age, with reduced stomach acid, after certain gastric surgery and with long term use of some medicines. Those are compositional and physiological facts rather than advice.

Testing

Potency is assayed on every lot by a laboratory with no ownership tie to this company, with heavy metals and microbials screened alongside. Light degrades cobalamins, so the tablets ship in an opaque bottle, and under strength lots are withdrawn with the failing certificate left published.

Where it sits

This tablet is on the vitamins page alongside the methylated B complex, for anyone who wants the single nutrient rather than all eight. Our certificate guide covers which lines on a potency report matter, and your lot certificate is linked on this page.
