Description

Whey protein at 25 grams a scoop, no gums and no artificial sweetener, in two options: isolate vanilla 2lb and concentrate chocolate 5lb. Those are not two flavours of the same powder. Isolate and concentrate are different grades with different protein percentages, different lactose content and a different price per gram, and this whey protein listing prints both sets of figures rather than one.

The two options, side by side

Isolate vanilla 2lb above 90 percent protein on a dry basis
Concentrate chocolate 5lb 70 to 80 percent protein
Protein per scoop 25 g in both, from different scoop weights
Lactose minimal in the isolate, more in the concentrate
Added no gums, no artificial sweetener in either
Published full amino acid profile per lot
Price basis per gram of protein, printed under each option

Scoop weight against grams, on both options

Here is the arithmetic that decides which option is cheaper. A 28 gram scoop yielding 25 grams of protein is 89 percent by mass, which is an isolate. A 33 gram scoop yielding the same 25 grams is 76 percent, which is a concentrate.

Both reach 25 grams a serving. The concentrate simply needs more powder to do it, so a 5lb tub of it does not contain as many servings as the weight suggests. Scoop weight, grams of protein and the percentage they imply are printed for each size, which is the rule across the protein page.

Isolate or concentrate, in practice

Our note on pricing by the unit covers why both options are quoted per gram. Isolate is filtered further, which removes most of the lactose and fat and raises the protein percentage. It costs more per gram of protein and suits anyone who finds the concentrate heavy going.

Concentrate retains more lactose and fat, mixes thicker and is the cheaper option per gram, which is why it is offered in the larger tub. Both are the same milk fraction and neither is a different molecule from the other.

Which whey protein option costs less per gram

The 5lb concentrate, almost always, because the larger bag spreads fixed packaging costs over more powder and the concentrate grade is cheaper to make. The 2lb isolate costs more per gram of protein and delivers it in a smaller scoop with less lactose.

Both figures are printed under each option, so the whey protein comparison is arithmetic rather than a judgement call. Anyone who finds lactose a problem pays the premium for a reason. Anyone who does not is paying for a filtration step they will not notice.

Flavour, and why there are only two

Vanilla on the isolate and chocolate on the concentrate. Chocolate covers the heavier taste of a concentrate better, and vanilla leaves a cleaner isolate alone. Unflavoured whey protein in a 5lb bag is listed separately for anyone who would rather flavour it themselves.

No gums, and what that changes

Xanthan gum, guar gum and soy lecithin are standard in a flavoured whey protein because they thicken the mix and help the powder disperse. Without them a whey protein shake is thinner and needs a few more shakes to break up clumps.

The benefit is that the scoop is protein and flavouring rather than protein, flavouring and thickener, which narrows the gap between scoop weight and grams of protein. The trade is texture, and it is a real trade rather than a free improvement.

Amino spiking, and why the full profile is published

On a whey protein label, a figure calculated from nitrogen reads the same whether the nitrogen came from complete protein or from added free glycine, taurine or creatine. Our certificates carry the whole amino acid breakdown per lot rather than total nitrogen, which is the only way spiking becomes visible from outside a factory.

What the research measured

Comparison studies have fed 20 to 40 grams of whey protein and sampled blood afterwards, measuring plasma leucine and amino acid appearance along with muscle protein synthesis rates, generally finding a faster and higher peak than from casein or soy. That describes what those measurements showed and is not a claim about either option here.

Testing

Every lot of both options goes to a laboratory outside this business for protein content by a method that is not nitrogen alone, a full amino acid breakdown, heavy metals and microbials. Lots assaying below their stated grams are withdrawn and the failing certificate stays published. For reference figures on protein intake and what the trials used, the NIH fact sheet on supplements for exercise and athletic performance is free, and your lot certificate is linked above.
