Description

Melatonin 3mg in a two layer tablet, part of it immediate and part released over about six hours. The milligrams in each layer are printed on the panel and verified on the lot assay, which is unusual: most timed release products state only the total. A melatonin 3mg tablet built this way is aimed at staying asleep rather than at falling asleep, and those are different questions.

On the panel

Melatonin 3 mg total per tablet
Layer split immediate and extended amounts printed separately
Release window about six hours for the extended layer
Verification the melatonin 3mg total and the split are both assayed
Form bilayer tablet, swallowed whole
Other actives none
Comparison ten times the 300 microgram tablet on this shelf

Why a melatonin 3mg timed release tablet is not simply stronger

It is ten times the 0.3 mg tablet we also stock, and we are not going to pretend that is a small difference. The early dose finding research found 0.3 mg produced night time blood concentrations in the physiological range, and larger amounts produced concentrations above it for longer.

What a timed release format changes is the shape of the curve rather than its size. The prolonged release trials in older adults used 2 mg and measured sleep quality questionnaires, sleep latency and morning alertness. Those are the doses administered and instruments read in that literature, and neither sentence is a claim about this tablet.

Immediate against extended, and why both layers exist

An immediate layer dissolves on contact and raises concentrations quickly. An extended layer releases over hours through a matrix that erodes slowly. The first addresses the start of the night and the second the middle of it, which is why the split is worth printing.

Crushing or splitting the tablet destroys the extended layer and turns the whole 3 mg into an immediate dose. That is a practical instruction rather than a warning, and it is the one thing to get right with this format.

Which of the two melatonin tablets to look at

If you have never taken it, the 300 microgram tablet is the lower starting point and the one that matches the dose finding work. If you have used melatonin at 5 or 10 mg and want to come down while keeping an extended release, this is the intermediate step. Both sit on the sleep and calm page with their figures printed.

What timed release means on a melatonin 3mg label

There is no regulated definition, which is the first thing to know. Any product may describe itself as timed, extended or sustained release without demonstrating a release profile, and most never publish one. A dissolution test is what turns that phrase into a specification.

Ours is measured on every lot, and the layer split is printed rather than summarised. That is the whole difference between a melatonin 3mg tablet described as timed release and one demonstrated to behave that way, and it is the sort of thing our certificate guide walks through.

Who the extended format is aimed at

People who fall asleep and then wake at three in the morning, which is a different complaint from lying awake at the start of the night. The prolonged release trials recruited older adults, in whom night time melatonin production is lower on average.

Stating who a trial recruited is part of describing what it measured. A melatonin 3mg extended tablet was not tested on everyone, and the published population is as relevant as the published dose.

Regulatory status, for context

In the United States melatonin is sold as a dietary supplement. In the United Kingdom, Australia and much of the European Union a 2 mg prolonged release tablet is a prescription medicine. Same molecule, different classification, and the FDA dietary supplement pages explain the American framework.

Grogginess, and the honest trade

Morning sleepiness was the complaint most often recorded in trials of larger doses, and an extended release format keeps concentrations up for longer by design. Anyone who has to be sharp early should weigh that against the reason they are buying it. A melatonin 3mg extended tablet is not a free lunch.

Testing

Every lot is assayed for total content and for the layer split by an independent laboratory, with dissolution behaviour, heavy metals and microbials on the same report. A timed release claim is only meaningful with a dissolution profile behind it. Lots outside specification are withdrawn and the failing certificate stays published.
