Why melatonin 300mcg is the figure the research kept returning to

The dose response work carried out at MIT in the 1990s tested amounts from 0.1 mg upward and found that 0.3 mg produced blood melatonin concentrations in the range the body itself reaches at night. Larger doses produced concentrations well above it, and those stayed high into the following morning.

The endpoints those studies measured were sleep onset latency, plasma melatonin concentration curves and next day alertness tests. That is a description of what was administered and measured in the published literature. It is not a claim about this bottle, and a tablet is not a treatment for anything.

How a 5mg bottle came to be normal

Not through dose finding. Melatonin is cheap, a larger number on a front label sells better, and in the United States it is regulated as a dietary supplement rather than a medicine, so nothing obliged anyone to justify the figure. In several other countries it is prescription only at 2 mg.

The result is a shelf where the smallest commonly available tablet is already many times the physiological amount, and where splitting one is the only route to a lower dose. That is the gap this listing fills, and the general argument is in dosing: start low, and what that actually means.

Why 180 servings of melatonin 300mcg costs less than a month of most things

Melatonin is inexpensive to synthesise and a microgram amount uses very little of it, so the cost per serving here is about 8 cents. Almost all of the price of any melatonin product is packaging, testing and distribution rather than the molecule.

Which is worth knowing, because it means a 10 mg tablet is not meaningfully more expensive to make than a melatonin 300mcg one. The larger number on a front label is a marketing decision, not a manufacturing cost passed on.

Splitting a larger tablet instead

People do it, and it is an imprecise business. A 5 mg tablet quartered is 1.25 mg at best and a pile of fragments at worst, and content uniformity across the pieces is not something a kitchen can verify. A tablet made at the amount you want removes the guesswork.

Timing, which the literature treats as separate from dose

The chronobiology work distinguishes between amount and timing, and measured phase shifts against when a melatonin 300mcg sized dose was given rather than how large it was. Investigators recorded shifts relative to when a dose was given relative to a person’s own rhythm rather than against how large it was. A small amount at the right hour and a large amount at the wrong one are different interventions in that literature.

Next day grogginess, reported plainly
