Description
Bacopa monnieri extract standardised to 50 percent bacosides, with the bacoside weight printed next to the extract weight rather than left for you to work out. The plant is a creeping marsh herb, called water hyssop in English and brahmi in Ayurvedic practice, and the whole plant above the root is what goes into a bacopa monnieri extract. Fifty percent is at the top of what the market offers, and the number is worth a closer look than most labels invite.
On the panel
| Plant | Bacopa monnieri, whole plant, aerial parts |
|---|---|
| Standardisation | 50 percent bacosides, measured by HPLC on the lot |
| Arithmetic | a 300 mg extract at 50 percent carries 150 mg of bacosides |
| Marker compounds | bacoside A and bacoside B, the saponin fraction |
| Taken with | food, since the saponins are hard on an empty stomach |
| Form | capsule, extract powder, no plant filler padding the weight |
| Price basis | per milligram of bacosides, printed under the price |
Why a bacopa monnieri percentage can be measured two ways
Here is the detail that makes two labels incomparable. Bacoside content can be read spectrophotometrically or by HPLC, and the first method tends to return a higher number than the second because it picks up compounds the second one separates out. So a 50 percent extract measured one way may hold less of the saponins than a 45 percent extract measured the other. Our certificate names the method next to the result.
That is not a complaint about other sellers, it is a measurement problem the whole category lives with. The three figures that make any botanical comparable, extract ratio, plant part and marker percentage, are set out on the herbals page, and the method behind the percentage is the fourth one nobody prints.
What the trials used, and how long they ran
Published human studies have mostly given 300 mg a day of an extract standardised near 50 percent bacosides, over 12 weeks, and the endpoints measured were delayed recall on the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test, attention and reaction time tasks, and self reported questionnaires. The trials that ran only four or six weeks generally recorded nothing. That is a description of the published literature on bacopa monnieri and the doses it administered. It is not a claim about this bottle.
The practical consequence is a long calendar. If you are going to try it, the research timeframe is two to three months, not a fortnight, which also means a single bottle is not a fair test. We would rather print that than sell you a quick result.
Bacopa monnieri in capsules and in loose powder
The extract is intensely bitter, which is why almost nobody sells it loose. Traditional preparations used the fresh or dried whole plant in far larger weights, so a 50 percent extract is a modern article with no traditional dose behind it. Setting a 300 mg capsule of bacopa monnieri extract beside a spoonful of brahmi powder is not a comparison at all: the first is concentrated against a marker compound and the second is a vegetable. Both reach the market under the same English name, which is why the panel here states species, plant part and the measured bacopa monnieri percentage together rather than one of the three.
Stomach, and the saponins
Bacosides are saponins, and saponins taken on an empty stomach commonly cause cramping and nausea. The panel says with food for that reason. It is a tolerability note taken from the trial reports, where gastrointestinal complaints were the most frequently recorded adverse events, and it is the sort of thing a product page usually leaves off.
Identity and contaminant testing
Marsh plants grow in standing water, which is exactly where heavy metals accumulate, so this is one of the certificates worth reading line by line. An independent laboratory confirms species, measures the bacoside percentage by HPLC, and screens lead, cadmium, arsenic and mercury alongside pesticides and microbials. Lots failing identity or potency are withdrawn and the report stays public, as described in why we publish the batch that failed.
For a plain government summary of what has and has not been studied for individual plants, the NCCIH herbs at a glance series is free and sells nothing. The rest of the botanical range is indexed on supplements index, and your lot certificate is linked on this page.

Works well. I would prefer it unflavoured but that is a personal thing.

Third time reordering. Consistent batch to batch, which is the whole point.

Exactly what the label says. I checked the lab sheet before I ordered.

Solid. Slightly gritty when mixed but dissolves if you wait.

The price per milligram made the comparison obvious. Switched from a pricier brand.
