Description

A Women’s Multivitamin taken two capsules a day with food, 60 servings at about 70 cents each, built on methylated B vitamins and iron as the bisglycinate chelate rather than ferrous sulfate. What actually separates a women’s multivitamin from a general one is usually the iron and the folate, and both of those repay a close reading of the panel.

What is in the serving

Serving two capsules, 60 servings per bottle
Iron as ferrous bisglycinate, stated in elemental milligrams
Folate as L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate, in micrograms DFE
B12 as methylcobalamin, not cyanocobalamin
B6 as pyridoxal 5-phosphate
Minerals chelated, with elemental figures printed
Cost about 70 cents a serving

Why this women’s multivitamin takes two capsules

In a women’s multivitamin, chelated minerals and methylated vitamins are physically bulkier than oxides and synthetic forms at the same elemental amount. Magnesium bisglycinate takes several times the volume of magnesium oxide for the same milligrams of magnesium.

So a one a day formula using those forms either holds less or uses a very large capsule. Two capsules is the honest consequence of the ingredient choices, and it also means a 120 count bottle is a month rather than four. Units per serving and servings per container sit next to each other on every listing for that reason.

Iron, stated as elemental

This is where iron labels mislead. Ferrous sulfate at 325 mg supplies about 65 mg of elemental iron, because most of that weight is sulfate. Bisglycinate carries its own elemental fraction, around 20 percent, so the compound weight and the iron weight differ again.

The elemental figure goes in the amount column here with the compound underneath. Comparison trials have measured fewer gastrointestinal complaints with bisglycinate than with ferrous sulfate at equal elemental iron, which is a description of those studies rather than a claim about this bottle. The reference tables are on the NIH iron fact sheet.

Folate, and the DFE unit

Folate is measured in micrograms of dietary folate equivalents, and folic acid, food folate and methylfolate convert into that unit at different rates. Two labels showing the same microgram figure can therefore mean different things, so the DFE figure and the raw weight both appear.

What separates a women’s multivitamin from a general one

Iron and folate, mostly, and sometimes a higher calcium or vitamin D figure. A general multivitamin is often iron free, since adult men and postmenopausal women have lower requirements, and formulas without iron are labelled iron free on the front here rather than leaving you to scan the panel.

Beyond those, a women’s multivitamin and a general one are frequently the same formula with a different label. The way to tell is to read both panels line by line, which is why every amount and every chemical form is printed on this listing.

How long a women’s multivitamin bottle lasts

Sixty servings at two capsules each is a 120 capsule bottle and a month of use. Cost per serving sits under the price for that reason, and it is the figure that makes a one a day and a two a day formula comparable. The men’s version, which is iron free, is on the men’s page.

The timing notes

Iron and calcium compete for absorption, so a calcium supplement is better taken at a different time of day from this one. Iron is also better tolerated with food, which is why the panel says with a meal rather than leaving it open.

The warning the FDA requires

Accidental iron overdose is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under six, and any product containing iron carries that warning by law. Keep this bottle out of reach, and treat the warning as a real one rather than boilerplate.

Testing

Every lot of this women’s multivitamin is assayed for each listed nutrient by a laboratory with no ownership tie to this company, with heavy metals and microbials screened alongside, since a multivitamin is only as sound as its weakest assay. Under strength lots are withdrawn and the failing certificate stays published. The rest of this shelf, including the prenatal and postnatal formulas grouped separately, is on the women’s page, and your lot report is linked above.
