Description

Astaxanthin 12mg a softgel, from Haematococcus pluvialis, 60 servings at about 57 cents each. Twelve milligrams is the amount the human studies have mostly used, and it is not what the shelf normally offers. Four and six milligram bottles are the common retail strengths, so one astaxanthin 12mg softgel replaces two or three of those, and the cost per milligram usually falls when you work it out. The carotenoid is deep red, which is why the oil inside the softgel is dark.

Natural and synthetic astaxanthin 12mg are not the same material

Most astaxanthin made in the world is synthetic and goes into fish feed, where it turns farmed salmon pink. Synthetic material is a different stereoisomer mixture from the algal kind and is largely free rather than esterified. Algal astaxanthin arrives mostly as mono and di esters, which is the form the human literature used. The source organism is named on this panel for that reason, not as a flourish.

Our omega and fats page applies the same rule to fish oil, where ethyl ester and re-esterified triglyceride are also quietly different articles sold at the same stated weight. Form belongs in the amount column, not in the small print.

Four, six and astaxanthin 12mg: the price arithmetic

Retail bottles cluster at 4 and 6 mg, and the cost per milligram of those is usually higher than it looks. Sixty softgels at 4 mg is 240 mg in the bottle. Sixty at 6 mg is 360 mg. This bottle holds 720 mg, so it carries two to three times the carotenoid of the common strengths and the cost per milligram falls accordingly. Price per milligram is printed under the price on every listing here for that reason, and it is the only figure that makes two different strengths comparable at a glance.

Why an astaxanthin 12mg softgel is oily

The carotenoid is fat soluble and comes out of the algal cell as an oleoresin, a thick red concentrate that is then diluted into a carrier oil and sealed in a softgel. A dry tablet would need a different processing route and would not carry the same esterified profile. The practical consequence is that an astaxanthin 12mg softgel belongs with a meal that has some fat in it, and that the oxidation lines on the certificate matter here as much as they do on a fish oil.

What the research measured, and at what dose

Published human trials on astaxanthin have mostly run 4 to 12 mg a day for eight to twelve weeks, measuring skin elasticity and moisture instruments, eye accommodation and visual fatigue questionnaires, and blood lipid and oxidative marker panels. The upper end of that range is what this softgel matches. Stating the dose a trial used and the instrument it read is a description of the literature. It is not a claim about what the product will do for anyone who buys it.

Testing

Every lot of astaxanthin 12mg softgels is assayed for carotenoid content by an independent laboratory, with heavy metals, microbials and oxidation parameters on the same certificate, since the carrier is an oil and oils go rancid. Under strength lots are withdrawn from sale and the failing report stays on the public page. If a certificate is unfamiliar territory, how to read a certificate of analysis covers the lines that matter in about five minutes.

Reference reading

Carotenoids other than beta-carotene have no established intake reference, so there is no official number to measure an astaxanthin 12mg softgel against. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements fact sheet library is the best free source for how a federal reviewer handles that kind of gap, and it is where the vitamin and mineral comparisons on the supplements index are checked against. The lot certificate is linked above.
